Badseys CaféBistro is an award-winning restaurant beside the Oxford Canal at Hillmorton Locks, Rugby.
Inside its like someone's idiosyncratic front room, with a casual atmosphere, full of pictures and hardware depicting history of the canal, the local people who lived by and worked on it, and the 1936 boat called Badsey that is moored outside. Outside, its a canal-side pub beer-garden
Via their company Vinemans Ltd and registered trade mark canalchef, proprietors Ian and Lesley Lauder have, without really meaning to, attracted six gold awards and various national newspaper and TV features.
But really, its only a cafe ~ canal life is slow ~ canalchef doesn't do fast.
Those who read of the awards and imagine a top restaurant experience of nouveau cuisine, crisp linen and grovelling waiters will be disappointed. At Badsey's, all that matters is the food. Quality ingredients, generous portions and exceptional range of menu choice at low prices without VAT or Service Charge.
You might just pop in for a tea or to get icecream for the kids.
If its food you're after, whether a bacon butty or a three course meal, each dish is cooked to order whilst you slow down, sip a wine, a pint of real ale or freshground coffee, view the exhibits, chat to the locals or to Lesley at the bar (on left in the picture)>>
or just sit at a table and watch the boats slip by.
